Thunderbolt display won't wake up

My TB display is also in sleep mode, but it's the MBP that is the problem. The only way to make it wake up is to open the lid and press the power button. If I open the lid and press one of the built in keyboard keys or use the trackpad nothing happens. I have to use the power button.
